Four Dead in Two Car Crashes on I-78 Tuesday

State police from the Hamburg Barracks say two separate accidents last night along Interstate 78 East in Berks County involved nine vehicles in total and left four people dead.

Both accidents began with driver inattention.

The first crash occurred around 8:20PM in Tilden Township, when 69-year old Brenda Brownfield of Georgia was in the process of delivering a new school bus to a destination in Canada and slammed into the rear end of a Chevy Cruze stopped ahead of her for nighttime road work.

The car became lodged under the bus and killed the 20-year old male driver, then proceeded to strike two other vehicles, killing a passenger inside a sport utility vehicle.

As a result of the backup by that crash, a five vehicle, chain reaction accident occurred a few minutes later near the Strausstown exit as traffic was being detoured off the highway.

A tractor trailer slammed into a van, which then rear-ended a Sedan carrying four people, before striking two other vehicles. A 24-year old woman and 54-year old man were pronounced dead at the scene of that wreck.

State troopers say these are still active and ongoing investigations. A 12 mile stretch of I-78 was closed in both directions for close to 8 hours afterward.
