What’s that moment like to receive word you’ve won a hard-fought election?
It’s the biggest election result from the 2021 municipal election in Lebanon County; Democrat Aurelis Figueroa will be Lebanon’s first Latina Magisterial District Judge, after narrowly defeating James Capello in the race for the open MDJ seat for District 52-2-01 in the city of Lebanon.
Capello, the son of retired District Judge Tom Capello, who held that seat for 30 years prior to retiring in 2020, was 17 votes shy of victory. He earned 637 votes to Figueroa’s 654.
For her part, Figueroa says the victory is not hers alone:
Figueroa must still pass the state certification test, but she tells the Lebanon Valley Daily News that she will begin the required class next week. She’s confident she will be certified to serve.
